Nora Radcliffe calls for alternatives to nuclear in Scotland

Dundee Liberal Democrat local party secretary Michael Charlton today (Sunday 16th July) backed the stance of Scottish Liberal Democrat Environment spokesperson Nora Radcliffe MSP who has said nuclear power is not the answer to Scotland's future energy needs.

Mr Charlton said, ''Nora Radcliffe has pointed out that Scotland could become a global renewables powerhouse and she is right to point out that we should not squander this opportunity by diverting huge resources to build expensive new nuclear power stations.''

Mrs Radcliffe said, '"Building new nuclear power stations offers the atomic industry a blank cheque.

''Already the bill for our nuclear legacy is at £70 billion and counting, the radioactive waste is piling up and throwing it down a deep hole and forgetting about it does not constitute a solution. It will remain dangerous for tens of thousands of years.''
