Dundee LibDems reiterate concerns over ID Cards cost

Dundee Liberal Democrats have today (Sunday 14th May) reiterated their opposition to the "New Labour" Government's ID cards scheme and the spiraling costs of this ill-judged policy.
Last week, LibDem Shadow Scottish Secretary Jo Swinson MP led a debate in Parliament on the cost of the ID card scheme. Ms Swinson said that estimates over the cost of ID cards had omitted those costs that would be incurred by Government departments other than the Home Office.
She pointed out that estimates by the London School of Economics state that the true cost of the project will be between £10.6bn and £19.2bn. This include costs incurred by other departments such as the Department of Health to adapt to the new system.
Locally, LibDem local party Secretary Michael Charlton said, "Dundee LibDems - and Liberal Democrats throughout the UK - have repeatedly said ID cards are a terrible waste of public money. The whole ID cards project is fatally flawed and will simply not achieve what the Labour Government hopes it will. Furthermore, given the real need to properly invest in the public services, spending billions on ID cards is a scandalous misuse of public money."
