Smoking Ban in Enclosed Public Places in Scotland

Dundee LibDems welcome Smoke-Free Scotland

Dundee Liberal Democrats today (Sunday 26th March) welcomed the landmark introduction of a smoking ban in enclosed public places - the first part of the UK to introduce such a ban.

The ban came into effect at 6am today making it illegal to smoke in restaurants, bars, cafes, hotels, theatres, bingo halls, church halls, sports centres, shopping centres, public transport, schools, hospitals, clubs, and workplaces, including lorries and vans.

Scottish LibDem leader Nicol Stephen MSP referred to the introduction of the smoking ban in enclosed public places in his speech to the Scottish Liberal Democrat Conference in Aviemore yesterday calling it "a new dawn for Scotland". He pointed out that this policy was first adopted by any political party at the Scottish Liberal Democrats Conference in Glasgow in 2004.

Here in Dundee Dundee LibDem Council Group Leader Cllr Fraser Macpherson said that the new law would not just tackle the harmful effects of second-hand smoke but would also encourage many people to give up smoking.
